For years, flag football players asked the same question: where does this go? As of this week, there's finally a clear answer.
On June 18, the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) and TMRW Sports — the organization launching a new professional flag football league with the NFL — announced a strategic partnership to build a unified global pathway for the sport. The goal: align the entire ecosystem, from youth leagues to college programs to international competition to professional play, in a coherent, connected system leading straight to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
TMRW Sports is led by Mike McCarley, a veteran of 10 Olympic Games with NBC Sports, and is backed by NFL club owners, institutional investors, and current and former NFL players. IFAF, recognized by the International Olympic Committee, governs the sport across 80+ countries and five continents.
Together, they are coordinating:
▸ Talent identification — building a funnel from local programs to elite competition
▸ Athlete development standards — unified benchmarks across every level of play
▸ Competition calendars — aligning youth, collegiate, international, and professional events so they complement rather than compete with each other
TMRW Sports CEO Mike McCarley described the professional league as "the aspirational destination for young flag athletes all around the world." IFAF President Pierre Trochet added that the mission is ensuring "the elite flag football ecosystem evolves in a coherent way, with common standards and complementary calendars."
The numbers already reflect a sport in motion. There are now 4.1 million youth flag football players in the United States — a 50%+ increase since 2020. More than 200 colleges and universities offer women's flag football programs. The 2026 IFAF World Championship in Düsseldorf (August 13–16) will serve as an Olympic qualifier, with the sport making its full debut in Los Angeles in 2028.
What the IFAF–TMRW partnership adds is the connective tissue: a reason for every youth athlete, parent, and league organizer to see flag football not just as a season but as a trajectory. The kids competing in Saturday morning leagues today are playing the sport's early chapters. The later ones are being written right now.
