Free Flag Football Clinic: How the Browns and Columbus Parks Are Putting Every Kid in the Game

The Cleveland Browns and Columbus Parks & Rec are launching a free youth flag football clinic and a 2027 league. Here's the playbook.

Free Flag Football Clinic: How the Browns and Columbus Parks Are Putting Every Kid in the Game

What if the first step into flag football cost nothing, and came with a shirt, a flag belt, and dinner? That's exactly what the Cleveland Browns and Columbus Recreation and Parks are offering kids next week, and it's a model every youth league should be watching.

What's Happening

On September 24, the Cleveland Browns and the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department announced a new partnership to grow youth flag football. It kicks off with a free clinic on Tuesday, October 6 at Kilbourne Run Sports Park for kids in grades 2 through 8. Every participant gets a t-shirt, a flag belt, dinner and ice cream. Registration is open through Friday, October 2 on LeagueApps.

The clinic is the opening act. Beginning in spring 2027, the Jr. Browns Flag Football program will roll out co-ed play across Columbus community centers, with support from Haslam Sports Group.

Why It Matters for Local Leagues

Cost, confusion and unfamiliarity keep many families on the sideline. This partnership attacks all three at once. A free, one-night clinic lets a nervous first-timer try the sport with zero commitment. Community centers put games within walking distance. A pro-team brand adds excitement that makes kids ask to sign up.

As Director Bernita A. Reese put it, the goal is to make opportunities accessible to every child, "regardless of their experience level or background."

What You Can Borrow

You don't need an NFL partner to copy the playbook:

▸ Lower the first barrier. Host a free or low-cost intro clinic before the season opens.

▸ Partner locally. Parks departments, schools and community centers already have fields and families.

▸ Keep it co-ed and beginner-friendly so no child feels behind.

▸ Make it feel special. A shirt and a flag belt turn a trial into a memory.

Your Next Step

Parents: if your child has been curious but hesitant, an intro clinic is the lowest-pressure way to find out. Browse youth flag football leagues near you, or look for camps and clinics in your area. Ready to level up skills at home? Check out our training resources.

Not in Columbus? Registration there closes October 2, so details are on the Browns' announcement. And with roughly 4.1 million American kids now playing flag football, expect more of these partnerships to come.
