Imagine your child stepping onto the same field as the LA Galaxy — not to watch, but to compete in the jersey of the United States. That just happened for 72 young flag football players from across the country.
From June 17–21, Team USA's 15U and 17U boys' and girls' national teams took the field at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California — home of the LA Galaxy — for the 2026 USA Football Junior International Cup. Facing off against squads from Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, and South Korea, these young athletes weren't just playing a game — they were representing their country on the world stage.
Run by USA Football, the Junior International Cup is the premier international competition for youth flag football athletes at the 15U and 17U age levels. This year, 72 athletes were selected from 14 states to fill four national team rosters — 15U Boys, 15U Girls, 17U Boys, and 17U Girls — after going through a highly competitive selection process.
Think of it as the youth flag football equivalent of making an Olympic team — and the stakes are climbing higher every year. With flag football set to debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, international competition at the youth level has never mattered more.
These 72 athletes didn't wake up one morning and make Team USA. They started exactly where your local players start: in a neighborhood league, on a Saturday morning, learning how to run routes and pull flags.
The pathway is real and it's traceable:
▸ Local league play — where fundamentals are built and a love of the game takes root. Find a league near you to get started.
▸ Regional tournament competition — where players get tested against tougher opponents and start getting noticed
▸ State and national showcases — listed on Flag Football Finder, these events expose athletes to scouts and national programs
▸ USA Football national team tryouts — open to qualified athletes who've earned their spot through competitive play
For youth organizers, this pipeline is the most powerful recruiting pitch you have: the sport your kids play on Saturday morning has a path that leads to international competition — and eventually, the Olympic Games.
The Junior International Cup is just the beginning. Team USA's senior national teams are set to compete in the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany this August — another milestone on the road to 2028. The more young athletes develop through local and regional play now, the deeper and stronger the national talent pool becomes.
And for the players who didn't make Team USA this cycle? Next year's rosters are being built right now — in leagues exactly like yours.
Whether you're a parent looking to get your child involved, a coach building the next great program, or a young athlete with big dreams, the first step is the same: find a league and start playing.
