Community Spotlight: Meet the Top NFL FLAG League Organizer in Boston

For families in the Boston area searching for flag football, one name keeps coming up: Metro Boston Sports Group. Founded by Dr. Jacob Groshek in 2017, what started as a small Turkey Bowl in Newton has grown into the official NFL FLAG program for the greater Boston region, serving thousands of players and their families every season.

Dr. Groshek’s, better known as ‘Dr. Flag,’ path to running one of the most respected flag football programs in the Northeast is anything but typical. He holds a PhD in communication from Indiana University, earned tenure at Boston University, and has lived abroad - but it was a gap in his own community that sparked everything. His son wanted to play flag football, and there simply was not a program available where they lived. So Dr. Groshek built one.

That decision turned into something much bigger. Metro Boston Sports Group now offers recreational and competitive NFL FLAG football for boys and girls ages 5 to 17 across multiple locations including Newton, Natick, Arlington, and Boston. The program also runs a dedicated girls-only league through its Patriot Girls NFL FLAG division and offers adult leagues as well. Players compete in weekend games that run under an hour, with practices held right before game time - a format designed to respect the schedules of busy families.

What sets Metro Boston apart goes beyond logistics. Dr. Groshek has built a program rooted in accessibility and responsiveness. In a youth sports landscape increasingly driven by early specialization and high-pressure club culture, Metro Boston runs as a no-cut recreational league where development and enjoyment come first. Every player gets on the field. Every family gets heard.

That philosophy has taken Metro Boston players to some remarkable stages - regional and national NFL FLAG tournaments, events at Fenway Park, the NFL Pro Bowl, Boston College, Harvard University, and Lasell University, where the program is preparing to break ground on Groshek Field as a permanent home facility.

As Dr. Groshek put it in a recent interview, the most rewarding part is not the tournament wins or the high-profile venues. It is watching the kids who come in without much confidence make the plays that change the outcome of a game - and watching them believe in themselves because of it.

Flag Football Finder is proud to partner with Metro Boston Sports Group to help connect even more families in the Boston area with this program. Our mission is to make it easier for league organizers like Dr. Groshek to reach the families who are actively searching for flag football opportunities - and to make sure those families can find the right fit from the very first search.
